Hard bop was a chronological extension of bop music. Like bop, hard bop has a strong rhythmic drive, but it often has a connection to the rhythm and blues of the 1950s and 1960s. Many major jazz figures have played music that fits into this genre, including John Coltrane, Canonball Adderley, and Herbie Hancock.
