Dixieland jazz developed and flourished in the 1920s and 1930s in New Orleans and Chicago and many of the stops in between the two centers. It was played by small groups and featured sections in which the entire ensemble would improvise at the same time. Louis Armstrong is by far the most famous musician to play in the Dixieland style. Other representative artists include Louis Prima and Sidney Bechet.
