Ballad jazz has a repertoire of songs that are usually played at slow tempos and have lyrical, singable melodies. Many of the tunes in the genre come from musical productions written from the 1920s through the 1960s. George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin wrote many of the ballads played by jazz musicians.
