Bluegrass grew out of country music in the 1940s and is named after Bill Monroe's group the "Blue Grass Boys." It is characterized by fast tempos and outstanding technical play on instruments like the banjo, mandolin, and violin (or fiddle). It is also marked by high, close vocal harmonies.
