New grass is named after the group New Grass Revival that was formed in 1972. The group used traditional bluegrass as its base and combined it with elements of jazz, blues, and rock. They also frequently played on electronic or electronically amplified instruments, an approach completely foreign to traditional bluegrass. Other representative artists include Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, and David Grisman.
