In the 1960s country music was becoming more influenced by pop music. Progressive country grew out of a desire to return the music to its roots and added elements of honky-tonk, Bakersfield style, and rock and roll. Most of the leaders of the genre were both singers and songwriters, like Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Tom T. Hall.
