Some of the greatest literature for solo strings was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. He wrote sonatas and partitas for solo violin and also several suites for solo cello. These pieces have been arranged for other solo strings, like the viola, bass, and guitar, as well as most wind instruments. String instruments are able to play more than one note at a time and therefore can create harmony. This ability gives them more versatility than instruments that can only play single melodic lines.
