| | From : | | • San Francisco | | Musical Style : | | • Searching from Black Hat Records, is an eclectic album that has songs influenced by Latin, Indian, Asian and Classical music. A gutsy and risk taking performance, Searching is a musical adventure for the Jazz enthusiast. Of the nine songs on the album, seven are original tunes, which are as eclectic as the band. The title song "Searching" has Latin roots with the three percussionist setting the groove. The aggressive nature of "Malcontent" is off set by the beauty of "Nikita". Drawing from the many cultures of the San Francisco Bay area, "Goddess" uses tabla and tanpura to give the song an Indian flavor and "Coalescing" has Asian and classical hints. "The Source" is a solid modern jazz tune with an interesting bass groove. The group displays their avant-garde roots on jazz standards "Footprints" and "Lonely Woman" as they perform them with high energy and emotion. While Searching is Michael's quest for his voice in Jazz, it is also a musical adventure for all that listen. | | Musical Influences : | | • John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter, Eric Dolphy | | Brief Description : | | • Acoustic Modern Jazz from the San Francisco Bay Area. This group is lead by the multi-instrumentalist Michael Cooke. Who performs Jazz on three different Saxophones, Flute and Bass Clarinet. | | Artist History : | | • Greetings Jazz lover from the third incarnation of the Cooke Quartet/Quintet or CQ. This latest version of CQ is by far the best group of players under this name. This is also the first time CQ has been based in the San Francisco Bay Area, early version were based out of Dallas, TX. |

"Searching" is fresh, innovative jazz from the Cooke Quartet. It is something to be played often and savored. Excellent music. If you have a friend that would like an introduction to jazz, suggest this CD to him or her, or better yet, purchase it and give it as a gift! High energy, emotional, lively, and enjoyable is what this CD "Searching" is all about!
Rating: Five Stars
Nick Dedina - Listen.com:
The Cooke Quartet make Hard Bop that, like Horace Silver and early Herbie Hancock, dares to be delightful. Latin and Swing touches make their mid-'60s Blue Note sound extra groovadelic-- this is one tight outfit.
Review From Boston, Mass. , September 15, 1999
Innovative and emotional jazz! Searching is a great album. It is not glossy or slick. It is jazz played with emotion from the soul. It made me feel as though I was sitting in a jazz club in the by-gone days, listening to musicians tell their stories of love, sorrow and joy through music. | | Add Yourself to the Artists Mailing List |
