Sung in French Creole, the Zouk (which means "party") is a form of music developed on Gaudeloupe in the 1980s. The Zouk originated from a political event. In 1981 (after the election of Prime Minister Francois Mitterand), the licenses for private radio stations were granted. Immediately 29 new radio stations began broadcasting in Guadeloupe, and the Zouk was popularized in the desire to air domestic music. Similar to the Compas, Zouk is more tilted toward disco.

François Mitterrand was elected President (not Prime Minister) of France in 1981. Spelling in the original: “Gaudeloupe” is Guadeloupe.
