Originating in eastern Cuba and rising with the introduction of mass media, the son was the most popular dance genre in Havana by 1930. Unlike most dances, the son has a four-beat (rather than three-beat) meter. Amplification allowed singers of the son to cultivate intimate, smooth and sophisticated vocal styles. Ensembles of three or four musicians are typical.
