Most rap atrists start out underground. It means they don't market or sell the records through a record company. They make tapes on their own, and then sell them on the streets. Sometimes when a rappers lyrics are deemed to inappropriate to sell in music stores, they'll sell their tapes underground. Before getting a deal West Coast rapper E40 became famous through selling his records underground. While know one on the East Coast had ever heard of him, he was very popular in California. Common Sense was the East Coast version of E40.
