Jaipongan is a popular genre that arose in the 1970s in West Java. The origins of the genre are ketuk tilu songs, traditional village songs that accompany harvest, circumcision or weddings. The instruments are small enough to be portable and the genre centers around a single female dancer/singer known as the ronggneng. Ketuk tilu literally means three ketuks, the ketuk being a type of gong and the three referring the three pitches of the underlying melodic figure.
