China

The Cultural Revolution in China from 1966 to 1976 was a disaster for music. Both Western and traditional Chinese music were prohibited in an attempt, that was all too successful, to establish a void from which the new, Revolutionary culture could be built without extraneous influence. China has a weak traditional music heritage, and despite the absence of extreme European colonization that occurred in other parts of the world, China adopted Western music has their own even before the Communist revolution.
