  Full Description
Johann Philipp Krieger (1649-1725), Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) and Philipp Heinrich Erlebach (1657-1714) set the culmination of Stylus Phantasticus sonatas for violin, viol and figured bass, with four collections of sonatas printed within 3 years time: In Nürnberg Kriegers 12 Suonate in 1693, and Erlebachs 6 Sonate in 1694. In Lübeck Buxtehudes opus 1 and 2 in 1694 and 1696. These sonatas also mark the end of the free form sonata. The following sonatas are more homogeneous, having longer, more clearly separated movements with more thorough thematic construction and less improvisational features. Krieger studied in Italy between 1673 and 1675 and worked for shorter periods in various cities in Scandinavia and Germany. Bertalis music was familiar to Krieger, since compositions by him were contained in Kriegers music collections. And this composers meeting marks the end of this journey through the history of German 17th century Stylus Phantasticus.
