Chamber music initially acquired its name because it was music that was played by a small number of musicians in a small space -- often the chamber. Although chamber music is now performed in an area of any size, the term still specifies that it is a piece written for a small ensemble. Most pieces in this genre are written for groups of two to five performers, although it can include up to thirteen or so musicians.
