Genre FAQ

What is a Genre? Why do I see the same song in different Genres?

Q: What is a Genre?

A: A genre functions like a category for songs, compositions, artists, or music in general. Genres are made unique by their distinctive types of sound, harmony, melody, form, rhythm, and instruments. Some Genre listings are more descriptive of the medium than they are of the style (i.e. "String Quartet"). Classifying music into convenient categories is never an easy task and the final results can always be debatable. Thus, many musicians and listeners have drawn greater distinctions by referring to specific styles within a genre as sub-genres.

Q: Why do I see the same song in different Genres?

A: Classifying music into convenient categories is never an easy task and the final results can always be debatable. To decide on just one single genre classification in this day and age of multiple influences and crossover further compounds the issue. Thus, when a ListenSmart.com artist posts new music, they are required to select a primary genre, and given the option to name a secondary genre, and an additional genre. Their music will then appear in each listing of the respective genres they have selected.
