The human voice has always been one the most important instruments in music. In the Middle Ages it was THE musical instrument. From the baroque ear forward, keyboard or orchestra usually accompanies solo singers. The most important genre of the romantic era was the art song or Lied, which featured voice with piano. In the twentieth century vocalists have been accompanied by a variety of combinations of instruments.
