Modern Big Band Jazz

Although big bands are no longer as popular as they were fifty years ago, musicians have continued to play in the large ensemble. Big bands are also kept alive in high schools, colleges, and universities. Many composers and arrangers have written very sophisticated pieces within the last thirty years. Some of the leading modern groups include the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and the big bands of Toshiko Akiyoshi and Bob Mintzer.
