An old and enduring form of Indonesian popular music, kroncong probably originated with the guitars brought by Portuguese settlers in the 16th century. Today, the kroncong ensemble consists of singers accompanied by ukulele, banjo, guitar, violin, cello, double bass and flute. Usually the texts of kroncong are highly sentimental.
