Industrial music developed from the aggressive electronic experiments of post-punk bands such as Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle into a largely electronic, dissonant, abrasive genre filled with fast, pounding drum machines and samples. The name derived - not from its heavy equipment aesthetic, but rather from Industrial Records, the original label Throbbing Gristle. Industrial music continued throughout the 1980s conveying images of doom, destruction, and rebellion. Despite a subtle musical overlap with the sounds of hard rock, the heavy electric dance core of the genre make it distinct. Representative Artists : Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Skinny Puppy.
