Disco

The beginning of dance-based popular music. Growing out of the Groove movement of the early-1970s, disco emphasized the beat, punctuated by funky bass lines. The groove, the ability to get people on the dance floor, was more important than the melody, the lyrics or the musicianship. Named after dance clubs, known as discotheques. Representative Artists: the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, K.C. and the Sunshine Band.
