This just in to the listensmart.com news desk....From the BBC. Will this be a big success? Or a total bomb? Or somewhere in between? And will we make enough money from Napster royalties to pay for Premium Service on MP3.com? Hell, can we even afford to be on the internet at all in 2001, what with all these new fees?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/business/newsid_1142000/1142663.stm

quote:
Napster's chief executive Hank Barry has told BBC News Online in an exclusive interview that users will soon be charged a membership fee.

Mr Barry also said royalties would be paid to artists whose material is swapped over the internet with the help of Napster software.

Napster had been sued and threatened with closure by all of the world's biggest music publishing groups, but late last year the internet venture signed a deal with German media conglomerate Bertelsmann.

Talks are now on-going with other media groups, including TVT and Edel.

Mr Barry said that details of the size and scope of the membership fee are yet to be finalised.

Speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Barry said: "Napster will continue to be an easy site to use and Napster will pay royalties."

When asked when the membership fee would be put in place he said there was no final schedule.

Bertelsmann has indicated that it could be brought in as early as June this year.

Napster's site connects music lovers across the world, allowing them to download digital music tracks from each others' computers free of charge.

The music industry has felt threatened by the rapid growth of the Napster community, because they fear the loss of music sales, while artists lose out on royalties.

Guessing the market

Napster has high hopes for the potential size of the market.

Mr Barry said there were 200 million multimedia PCs worldwide with the capability to copy an MP3 file.

Napster's software, meanwhile, had been downloaded and installed 57 million times.

While the average person may have 30 CDs, he said hardware with the capability of holding 614 CDs could now be bought for just $150 in the United States.

You did nothing at MP3.com. Prove you actually have some real world, honest to God buyers, in the real world, and. you might have an argument. Right now, you have nothing! No cedibility, and, no proof anyone even wants to listen to your music.

Now, gentlemen, take it outside. I'm trying to run a business here. (Plus the people that know how to send posts the Inferno don't show up anymore)

But, hey, Rene. Looks like Napster is working on getting you your money. Getting everybody their money. Which includes me.

57 million potential customers. Not including the Chinese.

Yeah I think some of their consumers were even at mp3.com until they all got hip

I detest the bold for gold plan over there it is so phoney a total pyramid scheme like a cat(aha) chasing after his tail.

Artists helping Artists in perpetuity I thought I would jump off that merry go round and go for real consumer action.

Well, there is plenty of consumer action on Napster. Maybe they will let us pay extra to get our name in bold. Napster Premium Service.

Of course, the big question is, will the consumers pay for Napster? A lot of people, including me, don't think they will. But, if they do? Then there's your way to reach customers and make money.

You will probably still need to keep suing for back pay, though.

Rene,

I'm not choosing sides here but Harvey was great in Taxi Driver, The Bad Lieutenant, The Piano (didn't need to see him naked though), and Pulp Fiction. J/K

What's up with this: http://www.sonicfoundry.com/Loop_Libraries/ShowLoop.asp?PID=281

That's pretty cool to be hooked up with S.F.

So why are you such a mean bitch? Dond is a cool guy and never hurt a fly, so try some civility, kay?

Oh yeah, check out my cool page at MP3c: www.mp3.com/cbh3

p.s.

Oh yeah, if you're so anti-MP3c, what's up with the Zeeza alliance? She's the biggest MP3c groupie on the planet.

Anybody know or know of a statistician that has the breakdown of ballpark %s re: poopularity of various groupings on the CON & Nap?

I believe that the fee will eventually nearly replace the free. The easier it gets to DL, the more the fee will be accepted.

if you think that napshit will ever get around to litigation and arrears for anyone who is not covered under the major corporate labels you are wrong. that battle will never be fought.

the only way i see anything ever working out financially positive for the independents online is for the independent musicians/producers to form a union and get over themselves long enough to get along and actually create a unified voice.
honestly i can't see it happening, mainly because there are so many artists trapped into the logic that someone will take care of it for them and then it will be better.

maybe this comes from the old "one day i'm gonna get discovered" fantasy that so many bands cherish.

snake we all got the drift the first time you didn't like what dond said, but if you search back through some of these posts here you'll find dond has some interesting ideas and has tried to contribute to the independent community, maybe he's just sick of seeing you mouthing off like somebody's pissed off grandpa.

i'm looking for solutions at this point, i have given up wasting my text on complaining.

Jesus H Christ

What the hell is going on here.

heheh, I mean arent you all grown men for
Christ's sake?

This is like romper room you have to admit.

One thing i do know is that if you are an internet non performing act or musician it is EXTREMELY difficult to get people to even attempt to listen to your music.

Its almost like a job constantly advertising all over the net but i think that is about our only choice.

Im about to go on a COMPLETE INSANE PROMOTION PLAN. I think I am loosing my mind actually.

I feel completely insane at this point.

As far as Napster here you go:

I work for a living on computers, printers, software problems, network connectivity problems. Any warranty and non warranty computer related issue.

I have found and seen napster on probably 90% of PCs i see. NO SHIT!

Why?

FREE FREE FREE FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE MUSIC.

So there is NO way people will pay an internet service for music in mp3 form.

If they are forced to purchase music again they will go back to music stores in their towns.

Any person with their music on mp3.con is helping to kill our chances at getting a following on the net and really making money.

If you havnt realized it yet:

YOU CANNOT TRUST THEM AS A BUSINESS. THEY MANIPULATE NUMBERS AND YOU WILL TRULLY NEVER KNOW HOW MANY CDS YOU SELL OR DOWNLOADS. THEY HAVE SHOWN THEIR CROOKEDNESS AND YOU KNOW IT.

if anyone has harsh negative comments towards mp3.cons new plan then you should not have your music on the site.

class dismissed

You idiots don't seem to understand this goddamned music business

use everyone (get to the top)
then forget they even exist once you there.

There is no stupid co-op communist shit to this it's so plain Everyman for himself.

When you get to the top try to stay there for 5 minutes you can't do this if you invite or are even nice to the competition.

On big gigs always take half the money up front and don't go on stage unless they give you a cashiers check for the balance or cash.

Fuck all you losers you don't know the business so go to hell.

You'll get it if god recycles you through this shit a thousand times.

I only care about me and my shit the rest of you bugger off. got it?

Wait!

I went to the SF site CBH3 posted up there and listened to the guitar samples.

Would you mind telling me what the hell is
Psychodelic about those well we all know generic blues riffs?

No offence meant to the guitarist but he has got to find some humor in that he played some riffs , stuck em on a CD and sold it off as some catchy title for the loops deal.

LOL

Well, I'd say most of us really only care about our own music, Rene. Truth be known. I know I'm my own biggest fan.

But human nature brings people together when they have a common enemy. Or a common goal.

After the common enemy is defeated? Or the common goal is reached? Then we can all tell each other to fuck off.

Napster is either our common enemy or will help us reach our common goal, for example.

Mp3.com is either our common enemy or will help us reach our common goal.

The RIAA and major labels are either our common enemy or will help us reach our common goal.

www.nakednews.com is really cool and thanks for printing that link over on Paisleys site.

Welcome to the hivemind, Rene. Let's go get some honey.

you run your own herd rene/snake/harvey whoever.

i think everyone here knows what a shaft the music business is.
and the consumers, which is why there is such an epidemic of digital looting and "sharing".

as far as your communism theorey goes:
cooperating with a large group of people long enough to raise some attention to a festering sore of injustice ain't communism.
it's call having the right to organize a union.

napster is about as close to communism as you can get and now it's owned by a german..how fucking wierd is that?
i bet bertelsmann would like to stop an independent union, just like MR and the con
liked to put a stop to any activity on thier forums that led to the truth about thier lies.

lighten up on all of us rene/snake/harvey we are not the enemy

Well, deel, Bill House is trying this. He was real active and really helped on the evaluation of the contract here. (ok, it bombed, but Bill did the good thing)

www.musicians-united.org

I think that by making it a $15.00 signup at the first and then making it hard to pay him he limited the project. Better to get everybody together for free and then work on dues and stuff. Kinda like Paisley, but with a purpose.

But, anyhow, he's trying that approach.

Maybe Bill'll show up somewhere and tell everybody how it's going.

Snake Crew's advice for Independent Artists

Firstly you can petition The Lord with prayer.
Secondly I don't know who you are what you're all about, and I'm not a member of the AHA
Or Union or any of that other nonsense.

If you are depending on other artists to launch your career look to the stars not to the dregs of the AHA this is just a cat chasing his own tail in perpituity.
You must get off that merry go round and set yourself apart.

I firmly believe they way to the consumer is through the mass media whether on a local level, regional, or National.
Lest we not forget that some of us go back quite a distance in this trade.
I know that the internet here set out to re-invent the wheel unfortunately we find ourselves right back at the wheel a few years later none the wiser than when we first arrived at the so called revolution.

Therefore we go back.
Rene's rules
#1 Its everyman for himself
#2 Must have talent(incredible talent)
#3 Must present this talent to the immediate or far removed masses
#4 Must have a knowledge of the business or be totally aligned with good management that has experience.
#5 Must catch a break (petition the Lord with prayer)

We all know now that the internet is totally irrelevant when put next to Rene's 5 rules.
Not saying you shouldn't or can't be there.

It is secondary(the internet) to the above perennial viewpoints.

Well, I'd say everybody is already in line with Rene's rule #1.

I would also say that everybody doesn't follow Rene's Rule #5 enough. But that is easy to fix.

Rene's Rule #3 requires a tremendous amount of capital.

Rene's Rule #2 does not jive with what I see at the top of the charts 99% of the time. John Coltrane had no number 1 hits I am aware of.

Rene's Rule # 4 also requires a tremendous amount of capital, I assume. That is, if one were to sign with Rene or his equivalent.

*Personal evaluation: I need to pray more and it takes money to make money.

rene i am not talking about forming an independent union for use as a tool to stardom, but for use in approaching giants like napster and the riaa who will not listen to tha small guy if and when they decide what music will recieve copyright protection and arrears.

but, dude you are way too difficult to discuss things with since you fail to follow any standard form of communication, instead insist on stereotyping people you have yet to get to know, and just shout down from your commandments from the lofty perch of your winter wonderland.

fuck you prick have a good life, there is that more your style?

Bill House stepped up to the plate & got a first base hit. Then the game rained out.
Bill is not a PR person nor a leader type in my view. That's not a put down. I respect Bill.

There were a few ppl. that could have stepped up to the leadership role but they obviously did not feel inclned to do so. I didn't want it either although I did push hard for someone with the backing of many to do so.

There is another org. that is together & trying to do things but I checked it out & they are weak. Most of them post on the sima eboard. http://www.onelist.com/community/simamembers

Right now the only OMD even close to having any chance is Ampcast.

I have proposed a $20 one time fee on the behalf of Ampcast, exclusively to be used for TV ads. It may sound weird but it is actually the Artists promoting themselves because that is the product, right?

Well, let's talk about Bill. Mainly cause he ain't here. But also cause Bill has taken a leadership role. Unlike us.

Bill framed the issues early on, talking about "slaves on the plantation". Then Bill started musicians-united.org . Hired a lawyer (Buck) who did a good job tearing into the listensmart contract for us.

I was on their e-groups list and would get their discussions. They talked about a lot of good stuff. Cheap bar codes for our CD's, for example. Bill was gonna start his own blues label. And when I talked about the need for a peer to peer for independents? Bill started working on the project.

And then he disappeared. Nobody answers when I post on the MU board. Hellooooooo? There's no recruitment drive going on that I can see.

So, what I'm wondering now is this? Is Bill "all hat and no cattle". Getting good things started and a few people going and then dropping it mid stroke.

Unite-us interruptus.

Of course, he won't be the first to do so. If you know what I mean. That doesn't make him a bad person. Just not the leader he said he was gonna be.

So, anyhow, fuck all you assholes. My mortgage came through and I've been praying every hour for music biz success. Everyman for him damn self. Lick this.
