I just put up a new tune: Sango Songhas at http://listensmart.com/droakroot In something of a departure for me, this is a minimalist solo guitar piece. I would love to hear your comments on it. This is not the final version. There are technical errors in the recording and I'm thinking of adding additional instruments - percussion and maybe a flute doubling the melody in places. Your constructive criticism would be appreciated. Thanks. Dr O ------------------ IP: Logged |

A dreamy, lazy, hypnotic feel. I imagine some Viola like slow counter-melody gradually building; maybe some Indian rhythm instruments; of course then it gets to be less of a minimalist piece. No criticism here; I see a foundation and lots of possibilities. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thanks Artie, I think a minimalist piece can have plenty of instruments - the main thing is that the melodies (such as they are) don't go anywhere. At least that's my understanding. Dr O ------------------ IP: Logged |

It sounds great! I hear an accordian for background sound. Maybe a violin to accent the melody with some light percussion. As far a song structure a theme/solo/theme could work. Hope this helps! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing!!! I like the song, and, I think solo voice and guitar, is a perfect showcase for the lyrics. I would split the guitar into stereo, to braoden it accross the pan spectrum, push 60 cycles EQ, to add a fat bottom, and, turn the guitar down a notch, and, center the vocal tracks in the mix. I would also add a very, very discreet, 750 millisecond, multiple repeat, echo to the vocal tracks, and, create an ethereal, subtle distance to the vocals. Not a traditional blues mix, actually, it's sop for modern folk, but, it fits your tune. This will give you a slightly, different mood for the song, but, it follows the lyrics. Not a conventional arrangement, but I think it would work. It's not a conventional song, so, take a chance! By the way, the basic song is very good! Nice work!!!! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think I owe you an apology Dr oakroot. The review above is for the first song listed on your site, and, not the one you asked about! I took my stupid pills yesterday... I do like that song however! I'll be back to do the job right, and, grab the right tune this time. Sorry for wasting your time. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi dond, Welcome to the LS BB. You're not wasting my time. Any review is useful and I'm glad you like the song (which must have been "Got to Get a Girl (live)" ) - I think it's one of my best songs. 750 ms delay? Really? - that's awfully long. I usually aim for about a quarter of a beat for vocal delays - around 125 ms. I can't remix that particular one 'cause it was recorded live to 2 - but I'll probably be making another recording of is sooner or later. Thanks for listening. Dr O ------------------ IP: Logged |

Really glad you're not pissed off at me! 750 milliseconds works as a very discreet echo, thats why I originally stated it has to be way done in the final mix. Usually I pan this effect, stereo, 180 degrees from the true vocal signal, and, let it creep into the final mix. It will work in your tune because you've got lots of time between lyrics, and, the echo will come up way behind the original vocal signal. It really becomes an ethereral effect, I think will fit that song. It will add a secondary "punch" to the vocal track. 750 might be a tad long, but, my gut feeling is, that, it's really close to your song timing. Mentally, I fell right into the rhythm of your song, and, past experience says 750 milliseconds is a good starting point! I think that's close enough to create a nice aural effect. 125 milliseconds is a very close repeat, almost a mirror image, but, going out this far, adds a true effect on top of the vocals. Like I said, it's a common modern, folk technique, but, most blues players are "purists" and, won't play that much with their tunes. It will change the feel of your mix, but, in my humble opinion, it will drastically improve the impact of your vocals... and, they're good! They deserve a little additional, effects attention. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Definitely an interesting piece. Don't know if it's my sound card or not but the guitar sounded like it could have used a bit more tuning, but what the hey. Personally, I wouldn't mess with it too much - maybe just remix a little to get rid of some of the pops and crackles, but that's all. Nice work, Doc. Dusty ------------------ IP: Logged |

I love guitar. This is lovely song! I am not a musician so I am listening from a purely asthetic point of view. Again it is a lovely song. ![]() LadyD IP: Logged |

Dusty, yeah the guitar was probably slipping in tuning - that's one of the hazards of alternate tunings on nylon strings - you can't just retune and expect it to stay in tune. I really need another nylon guitar to keep in open D (which I use a lot). This was a quicky recording straight into Calkwalk. Can't remix, 'cause I don't have the Calwalk file anymore (not enough space on my computer to keep uncompressed audio around). But a new recording is on my (very long) task list. Daisy, thanks! Glad you like it. Dr O ------------------ IP: Logged |
