weAponX, In the past year and a half or so you have talked a whole lot of crap about MP3.com and yet you don't really know anything about it. Since you live in San Diego, why don't you come and visit me at MP3.com? It would be my pleasure to give you a tour of our facility and let you see an inside view of our world. It would also be good for you to take a look at the hard working incredible people that you think so little of. Do not post a response, email me and set up your appointment. Paradise@MP3.com

Rofl, from the errors I am hearing about they can have 16x burners, but if they are still burning TAO it is akin to cassette tape! I just sent paradice a bunch of emails, including a forward of the email I got from Michelle inviting me to help moderate! Did you guys know that michelle used to help artists out directly? I mean she used to go out of her way for artists. ------------------ IP: Logged |

OK I just got off the phone with the dude, and although I still think pfp posting is invasive, they are not going to change it anytime soon, they are solid that they think that doing this is actually going to help overall traffic somehow. I ain't siding with noone, all I can say is that I understand G-Spot's POV a bit now- I AIN'T sayin I agree 100% I just see the POV. I don't like pfp posting- that's my pov. I do understand however why they think posting it is gonna help. Dunno if I agree with it. Look: The record companies will tell ya that TLC (do I got that right?) or somebody sold platinum, but do they ever tell you how much the artist (The artist, NOT the record company) actually made? Nope. It turns out that that particular group sold platinum but they actually made 30,000 bucks. MP3.com thinks that by actually revealing the actual pay that the artists made (remember not the record company and not mp3.com) it will pull the rug out from under the traditional music biz a little bit. I still don't like it but that is what they are trying to do. More later when I can think again. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think the psychological effect will be COMPETITION. Bands will see what others are making and try harder to make that much too, especially with a 1 Mil purse at stake. This will make more money for MP3c because of all the extra attention. New bands will sign up because they see that Lucky7 made $7000. I don't care why they started or what they think it will do, I think the above explains how the average artist will react to it. I strongly feel that the average listener will judge a band by it's P4P. I've already checked out some peeps pages and some I say "damn! they must be doin somthin right!" and others I think "couldn't buy a 40 with that chump change!" hehe! So they're determined to keep it. Pish pish. Let them show the money, it's just another ludicrous move by MP3c, and another sign that artist opinions don't mean shit. I ask again, did anyone actually "ask" for P4P to be displayed? 1% of that 65,000 artists oppose it but does 99% agree or are they not vocal enough to say anything? I swear about 30,000 artists over ther must be brain dead, no pulse. They don't say shit. Positive or negative. CBH3 ------------------

I can only tell you what the effect the P4Pdisplay will have on me - and that is to promote other OMD's. The displays makes the site look like a sleazy Amway click scam, and I am not going to ask my potential fans to go there. What, they think it is going to motivate me to work hard promoting them? Fuck them, it takes someone a whole lot cleverer than that to manipulate me. I could care less about their rigged charts. I have spent a lot of time finding out where my audience hangs out on the Internet. I control my where my promo traffic goes, and mp3c can bite me. I will be glad to pick up any fans from mp3c and lead them to my other sites, though. ------------------ IP: Logged |

More news from your roving OMD roamer. MP3.com wants to be the biggest. They want ALL the music. They don't want to promote it, they just want the end user to have access to all of the music in the world be it indie stuff or the majors. They want to level the playing field between the majors and the indies: and if you look at it that way it is working to some extent, because 303 Infinity (and most people would say who the hell is that) who is number 1 in the top 40 has made $15862.08 This quarter, $3,572.96 of which was earned in the first 6 days of this month alone. So, in that aspect, the guy is making almost more money that a major right now and he is not even on a label. This is just how it was explained to me and it is not an endorsement of any kind. I don't know how much of this stuff I'm buyin yet, and there are a few little details that didn't gibe so that is why I'm looking at it again today. Paradise confirmed by suspicion that Michael Robertson actually wanted the Beam-it thing to come to litigation. That is the express purpose of why he created it. Apparently, MyMp3.com is an entity within itself and mp3.com will not go under if everyting goes south. But Paradise seems positive that eventually they will win this thing, like the cassette tape won, like VCR's won, like Radio won. I THINK there are a few different elements to this than with those other cases, but we'll hafta see how the thing progresses. This company is willing to do anything to increase it's traffic. That is why they stuck with the unpopular decision to keep the Yahoo main page interface, because the numbers of visits by people using dialups increased by a good percentage. That is why they removed images off of almost everywhere but the band pages- They wanted the pages to load fast. Now this posting of PFP is more of the "money where our mouth is" stuff- and it is also an experiment, they think that it will increase overall page hits, and they are not going to do away with it unless they see that it is not increasing page hits. According to Dice, it is working, so they are not inclined to remove the feature even though half of the bloody world is screaming for it's removal. It means more pages hits for them as well, and THAT makes them MONEY. There was a lot more stuff that I talked to him about and as I digest it I'll report it to you in detail. I still hate pfp postings - I don't like the way these changes were foisted on the artists - I don't like the way the place changed from an indie oriented site to what it is now - I don't like to ay the place grew too fast, from the 513 artists that were on the site when I joined to the amount that is on there today (whether it be an actual 65,000 or a more realistic 10 to 20 thousand) All though it Paradise beamed about how BIG MP3.com has become, and hey, power to the place, power to the dude. But I like smaller. I liked Amp3 because I was able to interact with a smaller community, I don't care that the place was penny ante, I liked it. I like this place because I am able to interact with just about everyone here, except for the bomb-and-run flamers. I like it here because I can go to an artists page and listen to tunes and If I like it I can write up a quick review. But I'm still keepin a few things over at MP3.com, but I am removing my social security number from my accounts. OK live from Slow Death California, this has been the Ramb er, The weAponX report. Film at 11 I hope this answers a few of your questions. (I just reread this thing 5 times) Posting a copy over in the MP3.com forum. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thanks for the update! Well composed and very interesting. I find it very disconcerting to think that MP3c "actually" knows what they are doing and has these master plans. They weel rule thee vorld!!! Davey mentioned Amway which made me think: "hmmmm, what MP3c needs to do next is offer Multi-Level Marketing, long distance telephone service, sell books, CD's, video's, DVD's, and cosmetics, and do infomercials on TV!" Thanks for that info WeaponX, it was a very interesting and decidedly unbiased read. A quote from Bill Cosby comes to mind of when he was asked what the key to success was. I'll paraphrase his answer: "I don't know the key to success, but I do know the key to failure, and that is to try to please everyone." The point being, I think mp3.com does what they think is going to be a good idea, and sometimes people are going to agree, and sometimes they're not. But it isn't a democracy, so they (or should I say MR) are the ones who have to, and will, make the choices of what the company will do. We have a choice though. If you disagree so much with how they choose to run their business, then you can choose not to be a part of it. If you don't think it hurts you, then you leave your music there and hopefully enjoy the ride. Just my 2¢ ------------------ IP: Logged |

Count, There are many who oppose corporations, boycott their products, and protest who are not members of the corporation. Many times, a boycott just doesn't make a difference because not enough people do it. Think about: Some people actually protest obscenity on the internet! The nerve! hehe My point is that protest is a valid action toward any company's actions thanks to Free Speech. CBH3 ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well Spot-G, He was trying to impress me with the sheer size of MP3.com. That's all good and stuff but it just ain't my bag. He ain't no fool, he told me some stuff about the mucous industry that was kinda ILL and I don't mean that in a good way. I still don't like public pfp postings and most o yer chums over there don't like it either. Neither does Ernesto. Now that's rich- their biggest money maker don't want his pfp posted! I like the dude though, he invited me to sit in while he records his rap show, and I kinda wanna see the recording studios up there being an engineer and stuff. Ya wanna go up there tomorrow morning? You godda drive I is broke. Email me and I'll give ya my phone number. Peace I is out, ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Exactomundo, Davey. The negative element now on our mp3.com page has moved us all elsewhere. Unfortunately, the other sites aren't as developed as we would like yet. But that will change over the coming months. You see, for the first time, mp3.com has created a reason for 99% of the artists to be elsewhere. That is a powerful force. Even though it is not focused yet, sooner or later it will be. The moment it becomes focused the effect will be immediate and devestating. To me, it's like McDonalds went out of it's way to create the need for a Burger King. Or Coke went out of it's way to create the need for Pepsi. The need for a viable competitor to mp3.com has been created. The moment it is...WHAMMO! WeaponX, that was an excellent post summing up where mp3.com is coming from. Helped me a lot to read it. Nah! I'll just make Spot-G drive me up there and then buy me a newcastle! Or, a KING COBRA! Just a warning to Phil and Carl, these MP3.com guys are probably gonna try to woo me. It might work, if they offer me a freakin job! (I doubt it though) Now wouldn't THAT be Ironic! I don't know if I would be able to do it though, depends on if they have a medical plan and they pick up the bill for my Psychotherapy! And my Prescriptions! I have to take Klonopin for a panic disorder, and I am allergic to the Generic stuff- I have a special thing called a TAR set up with medi-cal that allows me to get the real stuff made by Roche- that's about 100 bucks or more for a hundred of these little suckers. ------------------ IP: Logged |

weAponX, Great summary of mp3c's position. It helped a lot. You know, it's their business and they can do what they like without consulting anyone - and should - if they tried to do it democratically it would flop. But, they could have posted an honest explanation up front - that would have substantially reduced the opposition... and relegated the conspiracy theories to crackpots. It's important to treat people as if they were real. I look forward to the day when mp3c figures this out. ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Well, thank god they forgot about bands that allow taping and tape traders. For those that don't know, there are a lot of bands that allow their fans to tape their live concerts. Fans can copy and trade these tapes as long as it is done for NON-COMMERCIAL purposes. You can put up mp3's of these gigs, but no banner ads are allowed. The Grateful Dead originated this practice, and it is now a staple of the jam band community, but it is not limited to it. There is a thriving underground scene for these bands because of it. Phish sells out every concert they do, and they sell a lot of CD's, but they get NO mainstream radio play or support. As long as there are bands like this that give music to the fans and not to greedy corporations, mp3.com will never get ALL the music ------------------ IP: Logged |

Dr Oat, Damn right. You can find a lot of this stuff in Alt.Binaries.Bootleg(s) alt.Binaries.Sounds.MP3.Bootleg(s) Alt.Binaries.Phish Alt.Binaries.Pearl-Jam You know how namy covers Pearl Jam does in a single show? maybe 6 or 7! Wonder if they have to ask Hairy Fox Agency to get Mechanical Licensing? I think they just decide off the top of thier heads to do it and they do it- And it gets recorded, and then it gets posted! Hairy Fox should be suing these guys! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Uh, Weap, are ya talking to me? My name is Davey Boy Crocky, but you can call me Dave if you like. As far as the covers are concerned, the fans can probably get away with distributing these because it is not being used for commercial purposes. It just isn't worth it for Harry Fox to go after them. But by the letter of the law, distribution of these covers is probably illegal. The bands do not need mechanicals to play covers, just a PA license, and probably the venues they play already have ASCAP/BMI licenses. Oh, and allowing taping is not an off-the-top-of-the-head decision. The underground that has developed around these is quite extensive, and many of those fans would likely abandon a band that stopped allowing taping. Tapers have gotten quite serious about their equipment, and a lot of bands are now providing direct feeds from the sound board to tapers. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Davey Boy Crocky (edited 05-08-2000).] IP: Logged |

WeapX - Phish and Widespread also do lots of covers in their shows. I have a copy of a show where Phish did a smokin cover of The Ballad of Curtis Lowe, and my bud has a video of them where they do a version of Loving Cup that puts the Stones version to shame. I saw Widespread here in Raleigh a couple of weeks ago and they spontaneously did a little bit of Riders on the Storm in the middle of one of their tunes, and then ended the show with Can't Find My Way Home. One thing about being a band that allows taping - you gotta do a different show every time. For these bands, pulling out a cover no-one has heard them do before really gets the crowd off. ------------------ IP: Logged |
