Tom Aragon asked me yesterday what was different about this site.

Someone else, parzival, came up with the answer. There are no ads on this site.

Tom brought this up, I assume, to illustrate that this is very much a BETA site.

But since the artists get 50% of the ad revenue that doesn't make me feel better.

The main incentive that I see to sign a contract here is for the 50% ad revenue sharing plan for artists. People aren't buying a lot of CD's over the internet right now. Ernesto has sold over 4000 CDs but he has at least 13 different CD's for sale. He has though, gotten over 2,000,000 downloads.
And some big "payback" checks. From ad money.

mp3.com brings in over $1,000,000.00 a month I am told. Right now listensmart.com is bringing in $0 a month. The fact that there are no ads here doesn't seem to be something to brag about. To me.

What does anyone else think?

I mean, is this site planning on going from $0 to a million dollars overnight?

I think Tom brought that up in reference to those who are/were bitching about putting stuff on this site and this site making money off of it- Since no money is being made off of OUR STUFF right now, then the OM destroyers are talking out of thier ASSes.

When this place actually launches, then they MIGHT have a legitimate gripe.

Yes, I assume it was to deal with some of the site controversy.

But it raises a new and important question.
Because listensmart.com is asking us to sign publishing over to them in order to make money.

Pointing out that no money is being raised doesn't help to make some of us feel good about that. Does it?

I see it as neither positive or negative. It just is, and is yet another indicator of the beta statis.

Anyways, I disagree on the main incentive for signing the pub contract is to get at the ad revenue (well, at least for us).

Since we don't know how many artists will be here and what the revenue will be, we don't know if that will be a significant chunk of change or not.

What we are more excited about is the potential of having our songs used in film/tv (syncsmart.com) and perhaps finding a cool indie label via smartaandr.com

The first part, at least, is what I'm hoping for. That and perhaps some a&r guy picking up a few of my songs for other artists. I'm getting older and would really like to move more into the songwriting as opposed to performing. I'll be looking forward to that contract. Hope everything goes smoothly with it.

mp3.com actually has the right idea with
advertising. they are agressive with it
without being too intrusive. i get 4
genre-recommendation emails a day and
their artist newsletter and my.mp3.whatever
however often they send it. i subscribe
to these. they're chock full of ads.
i can click or ignore. i've even clicked
once or twice. i've never purchase as a
result of a click, though. search engines
make shopping that way almost unthinkable.

The film/tv and label stuff is nice to think about. Kind of a farmclub.com thing. Which could be alot of money waaaaay down the road.

But in the New Millenium ad revenue is where the money is. Like it or not, that is what Jim Griffin is predicting.

Right now, the ad revenue at this site is ZERO.

HZ, ad revenue is probably how you are going to get a return on your $25,000.00 investment.

Or is Jim Griffin wrong?

Not bitching, sins.

Just posing a reasonable question about our business here?

It has already been stated that the contract will offer us 50% of ad revenue. It's the other details that are not definite.

So, it is not bitching to discuss a major part of our business arrangement with this site.

Does this make sense to you?

Jim Griffin isn't wrong: it's just that splitting up $500,000 10,000 ways don't means that we probably won't make all that much.

But... I'd sure like to be pleasantly surprised!

You can bet L/S is going to have ads. They might be working on securing more V/C right now, no one knows but the principals of this company.

BUT, the ads will be here just like everywhere else.

Hey Prisoner -- I don't think anyone is argueing that they don't want ads. It seems like you were responding to someone that does. Did I misread your (or someone elses) comment?

Ads can be placed literally with the flick of a switch. Most sites go through a 3rd party to sell their ads for them like flycast or doubleclick. So if you have even a little traffic you can start earning ad money. Seems as though LS is already getting some pretty decent traffic even w/o marketing. So they could be making money right now!

I sent Sean & Co. an email about this a while ago. He explained that althought they have advertisers lined up and could indeed start making money now, he felt that it was an important statement to make to the artist community that LS woulnd't earn even $1 w/o first having the ad-sharing program in place. This is so artists know that even the very first dollar will be split 50/50. Also sean didn't want artists to think he was delaying the whole ad-sharing just so he could keep 100% for a longer period.

Looks to me like we would be splitting up $500,000.00 300 ways.

And also, a lot of those 50,000 artists at mp3.com are the SAME person. Under different names for different recording projects.

But the most important part of this math is not how many artists, but how much ad revenue? The amount of artists and the amount of ad revenue this site generates are not connected. And it seems like you are indicating that it may not be somehow.

Yesterday, Tom was going out of his way to point out we have NO ADS. Today, you seem to be saying that you don't think much ad revenue money will be here for the artists?

Well, why does this site have more to offer than www.farmclub.com then?

And why doesn't Holy Zoo have an attractive clickable ad like this?

Or a rotating smiley like this?

that is also clickable?

A very logical statement stanley.

However, Sean could also announce that all money's being raised now would apply to the first artist royalty statement. Giving all of us a better incentive to sign up. "We've got a hundred grand for you in the bank now!"

I think that announcement would be better received by the artists instead of the "We'll all start from ZERO" statement.

I highly doubt that ListenSmart will get $1,000,000 in ad revenue with just 300 artists here. I wonder if they would even get $5,000 a month at first. These things grow. More artists, more people come here, more ad dollars.

quote:

Yeah, we're guilty of that too: we have another page at mp3.com. Care to find it? Grimmbaby and DD Ess know... I wonder who else does.

Anyways, I very much doubt that the majority have multiple sites up. I'd venture to say that the percentage that do is small.

quote:

If you were someone hunting for music, and you find a site with just 4 artists on it, how long will you stick around? So, yes - the ad revenue is tied to the number of artists here.

quote:

Yesterday, Tom was going out of his way to point out we have NO ADS. Today, you seem to be saying that you don't think much ad revenue money will be here for the artists?

Oh, I think eventually we make make some bucks, but I don't expect to make a living at it. It would be wonderful to make a few hundred a month, but I'm not holding my breath. The sync rights have me much more interested. And good indie deal would be a bonus, but not a must have. Also the higher bitrate cds, and the feature of selling your real cds. Then there's the searcheable feature to make it easier to find artists you like.

And, I don't want to underplay cd sales: we do ok at mp3.com -- make much more that way than pay-for-play.

quote:

Well, why does this site have more to offer than www.farmclub.com then?

Farmclub:

Terrible interface, hard to find music you like, they aren't trying to promote your music for sync usage. My understanding is that they are more like GarageBand in that they are a record label -- the top bands win and get a recording contract.

Yesterday I mentioned that I was surprised that no one had commented on it. That's about it really. I asked that question a long time ago and got the same answer from Sean that Stanley got. I guess it appeared I was trying to make a point but I wasn't. If I was going to do that I'd just post a thread with that title.
This is just my own opinion but I think to many artists are spending way too much time waiting for something to happen so they can put something in gear. I too am guilty of the same thing and it's a habit I'm trying to break. There's nothing wrong with making a plan in anticipation of when something occurs but I think the most important thing any artist, including myself, is to work on the things we have at hand right now. One day at a time, every single day.
It seems as though when I post things of a serious nature I spend way too much time explaining what I meant by the simple questions I've asked. I ask to learn......that's about it...... no hidden meanings.....I think I'll go back to humor.... ........
Thanks
Tom

Yes, good point. I wouldn't be surprised to see LS offer a minimum payout anyway to get things rolling the first few months.

Also, I can see it now...

"Do you believe those bastards are only paying out $100,000. Did you see all those ads? You know that they made over $1 million and are keeping most of it for themselves." -- Sincerely, Hatchet Type Folk

Maybe it's an attempt to avoid any potential allegations of impropriety or just bad PR.

Tom, I did learn from your posing the question yesterday. Made me think.

Maybe not in the way you intended, but in a way directly related to our business here.

I never questioned your sincerity in making the statement you did. I just said it made me think of something else.

And, Tom, consider this. If you drop out of the discussion here, then I and everyone else here will just be bouncing our ideas off of Hatchet Man in the Inferno. You don't really want that do ya.

Cool......... When threads makes us ask questions we find answers......
The Hatchet Man actually has a lot of great points but most people refuse to acknowledge them because of his social skills and abrasive delivery. Therefore his motives are always questioned which detracts from the validity of the points made

i hope they come up with a fantastic contract that will maximize money and publicity for all artists involved.........
don't we all......i hope all our analytical brains here..(kenny included) will go over this thing with an unbiased fine tooth comb
and then after and if i do sign i hope they run ads all over the place.........as long as we all share in that.....wasn't that a major bone with mp3.com ????
